Radio Liberty
The idea to build a station at this location began in 1955, after extensive research by the American Committee for Liberation , a U.S. organization dedicated to bringing hope to people living under Communist regimes.
They chose Platja de Pals on Spain’s Costa Brava (at 41º 59’ N, 3º 12’ E) for several key reasons. Most importantly, the site allowed them to place 540-foot towers with antenna curtains right by the sea, making it ideal for sending shortwave radio signals.
The open seaside setting and the reflective properties of the seawater helped the signals bounce off the ionosphere just once before reaching their targets in the USSR and other Eastern Bloc countries, with minimal loss in strength.
